Over 400 pro-Romania demonstrators have marched today along the Main Street of the Moldovan capital of Chisinau. They want Moldova reunite with Romania as it happened in 1918.<\/p>\n

Carrying unionist banners and waving the Romanian flag, the demonstrators walked across the National Square where they have been met by anti-demonstrators, henchmen of Patriotii Moldovei Party (Moldova’s Patriots). According to sources, several participants of the anti-demonstration started a fight with some pro-Romanian demonstrators. Some of them ‘armed’ with eggs, threw them towards the opposite group. From first information, no casualties have been reported.<\/p>\n

Mihai Garbuz, the leader of Patriotii Moldovei said they have defended their country.<\/p>\n

“The citizens of the Republic of Moldova tried to defend their country. Unfortunately, the police officers did not defend the Moldovan citizens,” Mr. Garbuz said.<\/p>\n

The pro-Romanian demonstrators continued their march towards the Opera House where they sang the Romanian anthem despite the fact that the opposition groups tried to stop their event.<\/p>\n

A similar event took place yesterday in the northern city of Balti. Supporters of the reunification with Romania took to the Main Street with Romanian flags. A group of people, mainly pro-Russia seniors contested the rally, yelling and swearing toward the peaceful demonstrators.<\/p>\n

More similar parades will be organized on March 27 in many Romanian cities, the day when Moldova united with Romania in 1918. This year the two countries mark 94 years since the event took place. Moldova was annexed by the Soviet Union in June 1940. In 1991 the Republic of Moldova gained its independence from the Soviet Union.
