Christmas is celebrated in England since 596 AD, when St. Augustine arrived on the Anglo-Saxon island to Christianize people.<\/p>\n

The British have a traditional custom, met at other European nations, the establishment of a small show, generally a pantomime. The custom is very old, attested since Medieval Era, when the improvised actors called "mummers" masked and played small Christmas plays. Today the custom is maintained particularly in the rural area.<\/p>\n

Santa Claus is called Father Christmas in England. He is dressed in red or green and leave presents on Christmas Eve, but they are not opened until the next day.<\/p>\n

Children hung a pillowcase or stockings of the head of the bed, hoping that the next day they will find it full of gifts. The day after Christmas is called Boxing Day because in the past boys went from house to house, singing carols and hoarding up the money in clay boxes. At the end of the day, when the boxes were full, the singers broke them and divided the money.<\/p>\n

English people have their own way to celebrate Christmas. For them, Christmas is the best way to provide gifts and as the day of December 25 approaches, commercial shops are stormed. On average, an Englishman spends 70 pounds on the gift for the life-partner (without the cost of gifts for others). Thus, in the month of December is spent millions and millions of pounds. So this year, on December 10, when there were started the Christmas discounts, those about million Britons in London have spent 210 million pounds.<\/p>\n

The traditional Christmas table takes place on the 25th of December, during the afternoon. At Christmas dinner they eat roast turkey with vegetables and sauces, pudding with brandy sauce is the dessert. In addition to the pudding they eat also pies or other pastries, associated with dried fruit, cut in small pieces.<\/p>\n
