By Diana Ungureanu\/ Chisinau\/ Moldova.ORG\/ — Where do Romanians go on December 1? Alba Iulia is the sacred place of meeting in this day for all the people with a Romanian soul. In the city heart there raises the magnificent fortress Alba Carolina.<\/p>\n

This beautiful touristic place impresses by the splendor of its places, so well preserved despite the anger of the time, giving to the visitors the possibility to travel over two millennia, through the remnants of the three fortified towns, from three different eras, built successively on the same location: Roman Camp, Medieval Fortress and Fortress Alba Carolina.<\/p>\n

According to historical documents, Alba Iulia is firstly attested documentary as the capital of Dacia Apulensis during the reign of Marcus Aurelius.<\/p>\n

Alba Carolina Citadel was built during 23 years, in 1715-1738, at the initiative of Emperor Carol VI of Habsburg and under the oversight of the Austrian field marshal Eugene of Savoy, with moments of pause caused by wars and the plague of pestilence. The plan of the Fort was drawn up by the Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti, in the architectural style promoted by the military engineer Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban. At the construction of the fortress there participated over 20.000 serfs from the surrounding villages, but also the most authorized specialists of those times.<\/p>\n

Walls of Alba Carolina Citadel are built of burnt bricks, stone quarry or the ruins of the Roman Fort, constituting a defense which lends durability and size attributes. The perimeter of the walls is about 12 kilometers, the thickness at the base of 3 meters at the peak 1.20 meters, height rising up to 10-12 meters. It consists of 7 bastions (Eugene of Savoy, Saint Stephen, Trinity, Saint Mihail, Saint Carol, Saint Capistano and St. Elisabeth) which outlines the image from the star, specifies the style of Vauban.<\/p>\n

The access in the city is made through six impressive gates, different from each other.<\/p>\n
