The ruins of some of those cities fascinate tourists even today, and the legends and stories of others incites the imagination.<\/p>\n<p>If you didn&rsquo;t guess about what cities we talk, then pay attention on the following.<br \/>\nThe first city is, perhaps, the most enigmatic, its existence being still in doubt and its location generating lots of polemics between the scientists. It is about the Atlantis, which Plato placed in the Atlantic Ocean, but the researchers seek it in all the oceans and seas.<\/p>\n<p>Another mythological city is El Dorado, which is supposed to be the land full of gold and which interested the great treasure-seekers since the ancient times until today. Somewhere in the depths of the South-American forests, in the Condor Land, the myth interweaves with the reality, but unfortunately it arouses a lot of interpretations. The German scientist Alexander von Humboldt declared, after long topographic explorations, that El Dorado simply doesn&rsquo;t exist and it never existed.<\/p>\n<p>The city Petra, another lost city, but which can be admired today, was a symbol of Jordan, as early as the VI century. Those, who had managed to get there, know how beautiful are the buildings carved with great craftsmanship directly in the mountain, how fascinating are the viaducts and how they descend slowly towards the Dead Sea, located at about 400 m below the sea level. Petra wasn&rsquo;t known by the Westerns until 1812, when the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt found the town and described it in his diary. Since then, Petra is the most important touristic destination of Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>The following city disappeared after a natural cataclysm; it was fully covered by volcano lava. Pompeii is today one of the most visited regions in Italy, with over two million tourists yearly. In 79 AD, the volcano erupted massively for two days, covering Pompeii with a 4 meters thick ash. The ash, that covered the whole city, covered also its history, because until the XVI century nobody knew anything about its existence.
