By Diana Ungureanu\/ Chisinau \/ Moldova.ORG\/ — In the wonderful valley of Putna, at the foothill of Great Obcina, there stands the first foundation of Stephen the Great, Putna Monastery. The monastery was built on the place where fell the monarch’s arrow, the works starting in 1466 and ending in 1469.<\/p>\n

About the beauties of the monastery there circulate a lot of legends, and the significance, which it had, was presented in three characterizations, gave by three different sources. A Russian chronicle of XVI century says that Putna Monastery was the “dear monastery” of Stephen the Great. In the memory of people who built it, the monastery remained more tha a fabulous picture, presented later in by the chronicler Ion Neculce: “splendid, all gilded with gold, painted more with gold than only painted, both inside and outside”. And for scribes of the XVIII, Putna was “the head of all monasteries from Moldova”.<\/p>\n

The greatness of the monastery was built from the foundation by Stephen the Great himself, who wanted this place of worship to remain over the years an important cultural and religious center. The prophecy – desire of monarch became true, and Putna remains even nowadays an important pilgrimage place, here being kept with a great holiness the relics of several saints (the Three Holy Hierarchs, St. Ana, St. Martyr Panteleimon etc.). Inside the monastery there works a rich museum with valuable objects since the times of Stephen the Great. <\/p>\n

Designed from the beginning as a regency necropolis, the monastery Church today houses 14 graves of which 3 are royal, belonging to the monarchs of Musatin nation, including the monastery founder Stephen the Great. The monastery stays since hundreds years ago watching to preserve the culture, history and religion of the nation. Funded by Stephen the Great for Romanian nation, it remains over the centuries a living witness of this nation greatness.<\/p>\n

Besides the splendid monastery Putna, in this area can be still visited and other monasteries not less beautiful and special, Bucovina’s landscapes taken from the ballad “Miorita”.
