By Diana Ungureanu\/ Chisinau \/ Moldova.ORG\/ — At 25 km from Ramnicul Valcea, from Romania, there is a monastery which, according to a legend, was built from the wood of just one secular oak.<\/p>\n

I can’t say certainly if this is true or not, but I know surely that this monastery and its surroundings deserve to be visited.<\/p>\n

The high mountains and noisy rivers are left behind, this zone being assailed of joyful little rivers, the hills crossed by ancient forests, all being small, but chic and elegant. Also in this mythic zone a shepherd had fed his flock of sheep. One night, in a dream, there appeared God Mother and ordered to cut the big oak tree near the sheepfold. The shepherd cut the tree, that falling, in the middle had an icon of Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n

The shepherd took the icon and brought it in the village church and in the next night, Mother of God appeared again in the dream and ordered to him to build a church on the place where was the fallen oak. The shepherd, helped by the villagers, built a church of the wood of that secular oak.<\/p>\n

This was the origin of the monastery, according to one of the legends, and as perpetual testimony over the centuries, there are the wooden church, the secular oaks around it and the legendary Icon of Mother of God of impressive dimensions (height of 1.5 m and width of 1.1 m). <\/p>\n

The first documentary evidence dates since April 20, 1635, which attested that the founder of the stone monastery was Matei Basarab. The testimony of the monk Paul of Aleppo speaks about Preda Beancoveaunu, a cousin of Matei Basarab, as a founder of the monastery. The mural pictures inside the stone church marks the truth somewhere in the middle, because there are depicted the both in founders’ painting.<\/p>\n

A curiosity of the place, besides the church and the icon that makes miracles, is the wooden table of trunk of a secular oak that is packed with different countries’ coins and which, according to the tradition, fulfills the wishes.
\nWhether is a weekend or a longer stay (because you can accommodate on the territory of the monastery), a trip in<\/p>\n

This zone will rise only positive and unforgettable feelings.<\/p>\n

The distance from Chisinau to the Wooden Monastery is 645 km.
