By Diana Ungureanu\/ Chisinau \/ Moldova.ORG\/ — You can relax and rest in a lot of ways, but for me there is no other place more relaxing than a stay at the monastery, where you can meditate in silence and enjoy the beauty of the place. Such a place is Tismana Monastery, from Gorj, in Romania.<\/p>\n

The monastery is situated between the mountains, being defended by wooden cliffs, it has an allure of a fortress. Protected by strong medieval walls, it was built in fourteenth century, when a monk Venerable Nicodemus, who came from Macedonian lands, with the support of Prince Radu Negru Voda, laid the first stone in building of the monastery. On August 15, 1377 was sanctified the church “The Assumption of the God Mother”.<\/p>\n

After the death of the prince, the construction was continued by his successors Dan I Basarab (1384 – 1386) and then by Mircea the Old (1387 – 1418).<\/p>\n

At the beginning, the church was painted in an ocher color, with geometric and floral figures. The first painting was made in 1564, by the painter Dobromir from Targoviste, considered the oldest Byzantine painting in the Romanian Country.<\/p>\n

The monastery is one of the largest in Romania. Its treasure was robbed many times. But even nowadays it can be seen objects of worship, a collection of mural paintings, icons painted on wood, clothes, old books and the doors made in 1782, which are kept in the Tismana Monastery Museum.<\/p>\n

In 1944, the treasure of National Bank of Romania was hidden at Tismana. Firstly it was stored in the cellar, and then it was moved in the cave of Tismana Monastery, for more safety. Here were kept about 380 tons of gold bullions and 3 tons of Polish treasure given for keeping in 1939.<\/p>\n
