By Diana Ungureanu\/ Chisinau \/ Moldova.ORG\/ — In Western Mountains, on the mountain Gaina, in the “Country of Dead”, at an altitude of about 1500 m are asked to marry young girls who is thought are ready to get married. This event happens once a year, by St. Elijah or in the next Sunday after this holyday. This year, the girls fair was held on July 23-24.<\/p>\n

There are a lot of legends about the mountain Gaina, which explain its name (Rom. “gaina”=Eng. “hen”). It is said that while there were some works in gold mines, a golden hen came out and climbed the mountain, then made a nest with golden eggs. Local people, attracted by its beauty, tried several times to catch the hen. Finally, it ran away taking all the gold in the area. Moti, as are called the native from Western Mountains, had made diggings, but they didn’t find anything.<\/p>\n

Another legend tells that a beautiful and rich fairy lived on the top of the mountain and she had a hen. The hen made golden eggs and every year the fairy gave an egg to a good young girl, as dowry. The peace of this annual ritual was disrupted when five men dressed in women clothes went to the fairy and had stolen the hen with its golden eggs.
\nThe Queen of golden baths, angry because of the men’s deed, left this land forever. Since then, they climb the mountain every year, hoping to meet again the fairy of gold mines.<\/p>\n

For the first time, the fair was documentary mentioned in 1816. Locals from both sides of the mountain met on the mountain to find a bride for a man who wanted to get marry or match-makers for young girls. Also here were celebrated weddings, the priest being present on the mountain for such occasions.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, the fair is an opportunity of folkloric festivals for all inhabitants, but also for tourists that are eager to get acquainted more closely with traditions and customs of locals.<\/p>\n

Tourists who visit the fair have the occasion to get a great dose of spiritual pleasure and also to enrich their collection of handicrafts, the fair offering to everybody who wants ceramics of Bihor, wooden objects, popular textiles and culinary products.<\/p>\n

If you are still single, go next year on the Sunday nearest to July 20, on mountain Gaina and the luck may smile to you.<\/p>\n

The distance from Chisinau to mountain Gaina is 688 km.
