By Diana Ungureanu\/ Chisinau\/ Moldova.ORG\/ — A spectacular phenomenon can be seen every day, in any season and any time in Vrancea, Romania. Flames of 30-40 cm appear from the ground and burn out constantly.
\nThis is a splendid and quite rare phenomenon; it can be seen also in Italy, Azerbaijan, Turkey, USA.
\nLiving fires are an attractive point from mountain town Andriesu.<\/p>\n

I think you wonder, where do these alive fires appear from? These living fires are not more than merely a natural source of gaseous hydrocarbons with a spontaneous ignition. In the lower zone of Andriesu is the largest complex of living fires in Romania, not only as area (400 m 2), but also by as the quantity of gas emanated (50 tons\/year). In 1973, by decision nr. 165 of the People’s Council of Vrancea, on this territory was established the geological reservation, with a surface of 12 ha.<\/p>\n

Geological structure, consisted of sedimentary rocks, favors the exit of gas methane and other gases. Lack or untreatment of deep underground waters causes dry gas emissions.<\/p>\n

According to the local people’s observations, during the earthquakes the flames can reach heights of 2 meters. There isn’t a fixed number of outburst places of hydrocarbons, but on the place of the most frequent occurrence of fire and the largest ones were created some microforms with a cellular appearance.<\/p>\n

People who come to these places believe that these natural monuments are beneficial and magic, so coming here they pray for the fulfillment of desires.<\/p>\n

Over the times, they had inspired customs and traditions of thousands of years, artificial eternal flames are inspired by this natural phenomenon.<\/p>\n

One of these traditions is the Olympic Flame, which burns during the period of the Olympic Games. Eternal Flames became a symbol almost for all the Earth sides. In Romania, the “Alive Fire” is celebrated on the eve of the feast of St. Gheorghe and it is considered the guardian of all animals.
