Gerhard Ohrband\/ Chi\u015fin\u0103u \/ Moldova.ORG\/ — One of the most beautiful monasteries in Bessarabia is Curchi monastery, located 55 km from the capital Chisinau.<\/p>\n

Some legends about the history of the monastery claim the Monastery was founded by Stephen the Great (http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_the_Great), however, documentary evidence is not available.<\/p>\n

The most plausible version is that the monastery was founded in 1773 by the brothers Iordache and Michael Curchi, who built first a wooden chapel and only later began the construction of the stone churches.<\/p>\n

On the territory of the monastery there have been built over the years many churches, namely six. Today the monastery is architecturally composed of five churches, abbeys, cells, refectory, an entrance tower as well as the outer wall.<\/p>\n

The largest and most impressive church, which reigns over the entire monastery, is the church dedicated to the Mother of God, built between 1866 and1872.<\/p>\n

During the Soviet regime this place of worship was transformed into a psychiatric hospital. Until 1999 the monastery was left to its own devices, being deserted and almost ruined.<\/p>\n

Today the monastery is almost entirely renovated and it received a completely new look than
\nsome years ago.<\/p>\n

The monastery with its new appearance fits very well into touristic programs, being a tourist attraction visited by a growing number of tourists from Moldova and abroad. Sunday services, which gather many Orthodox Christians, are of a rare beauty.<\/p>\n

The countryside around the Monastery completes the image of a piece of paradise, completed by the waters of the nearby Vaticiu lake.<\/p>\n

It is a picturesque setting, wonderful, full of piety and faith, which deserves to be visited and admired. The Church of the Mother God is seen from a distance, fitting perfectly into the green carpet of forests and orchards surrounding the monastery and luring travelers into visiting it.<\/p>\n
