Prime Minister Vlad Filat participated in the opening of the initiative "A decade of traffic security in Moldova", the government’s communications and press relations department has said.<\/p>\n

Cabinet members, representatives of international organizations in the traffic security and health fields, traffic security agents volunteers attended the event organized on the Great National Assembly Square.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that the traffic security is worldwide established as a basic priority in the government programmes, including the one of the Moldovan authorities.<\/p>\n

"Pessimistic world statistics in terms of traffic accidents and injuries prompted numerous international organizations to submit diverse initiatives and concrete actions, in order to diminish the number of casualties on the world roads. To this end, a comprehensive international-level initiative is the launch of a Decade of Action for Road Safety for 2011-2020 starting from 11 May 2011. The event is carried out under the auspices of the United Nations Organization and directly coordinated by the World Health Organization," Vlad Filat said.<\/p>\n

The prime minister said that the Moldovan government signed a UN memorandum on the launch of the decade of road safety in Washington in May 2010. At the UN annual assembly, the Moldovan government reiterated its commitment to improve the situation in the traffic security field.<\/p>\n

The prime minister said that two states – Moldova and Serbia – were selected by international partners to be included in a final report of the World Health Organization on the carrying out of a decade of action for road safety in the east-European region.<\/p>\n

Vlad Filat stressed that, for Moldova, this opportunity of visibility on the international stage was possible due to the progress made and increased attention paid by the Moldovan government to the traffic security area.<\/p>\n

The prime minister emphasized that, to hold the concerned event in Moldova, the National Council for Traffic Security approved an action plan on the official launch of the decade of action for road safety. The concerned plan is aimed at raising the public awareness about a traffic security campaign, to which all the competent authorities, civil society, business environment partners, development partners, academic and scientific environment, all the community members are to contribute.<\/p>\n

Vlad Filat expressed concern about the fact that, each year, about 500 Moldovans die in traffic accidents, another 2,000 are seriously injured and about 50 families remain without children.<\/p>\n

"The traffic security is not a new problem; nonetheless, the activity of reducing traffic traumatism at the international level grew more and made itself conspicuous by an increased dynamism. Also in Moldova, we consider that there are more reserves to prevent and improve the accident-related situation. Our goal is to avoid these human losses, the sorrow and suffering they trigger," the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

The prime minister specified that, under a Global Plan of the Decade of Action for Road Safety, Moldova proposes more actions at the national level, in a cooperating spirit with the central and local public administration authorities, non-governmental organizations, private circles, social and development partners.<\/p>\n

"The aim of the actions within the Decade is to ensure a 50-per cent drop in the number of traffic security victims till 2020," the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

Health Minister Adrian Usatii said that an action of raising the residents’ awareness about the diminishing of the number of traffic accidents will take place starting from today during ten days.<\/p>\n

Representatives of the World Health Organization in Moldova and in the traffic security field welcomed the Moldovan government’s commitment to cut the number of traffic accidents’ victims and the actions undertaken to consolidate the traffic security.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Vlad Filat watched exhibits displayed within a traffic security contest organized by the Education Ministry. He took knowledge of the Traffic Police’s devices to monitor the traffic and discussed with volunteers of traffic security actions.<\/p>\n
