Chi\u0219in\u0103u \/ Moldova.ORG\/ — Spring in Moldova is celebrated with much enthusiasm, flowers and “Martisors.” This beautiful tradition has been inherited from the Dacians and Romans and symbolizes the rebirth of nature and all its hopes. Red is the symbol of love for everything beautiful and white symbolizes health and the purity of the snowdrop, the first flower of spring.<\/p>\n

Moldovans brought this wonderful tradition to the United States, and have been organizing the Martisor festival for a number of years in the Washington DC area. Martisor-2011 was a special one. The Association of Moldovans in the USA, "Casa Mare" brought together over 200 guests, representing communities from many U.S. states, as well as many supporters and friends of Moldova.<\/p>\n

At its one year anniversary, "Casa Mare" had an impressive list of activities to report, such as the implementation of a series of cultural activities and meetings with officials from Chisinau with the Moldovan community in the Washington region. But the greatest achievement of 2010 was the fundraising project supporting the center for street children in Balti – "Evreka". This project was developed in partnership with the Peace Corps.<\/p>\n

The cultural program of the Martisor celebration included an exhibition of paintings by Ion Moraru who brought his works from NY, a book presentation by Professor Tamara Ciuhrii-Moraru, and an exhibition of hand made icons by Natalia McFalls. The highlight of the program, however, was a show prepared by the children from the “Guguta” group. The "Guguta” group was created only five months ago; however, it has already managed to gather over 70 members and launched the "Guguta School," where children eagerly await the weekly meetings.<\/p>\n

The musical background and the "Hora Mare" (traditional Moldovan dance) were performed by the “Balada” band led by Mr. Victor Dubenco. The guest of honor, Valentina Popa, Moldovan folk singer, and Maestro Luciano Lamonarca, Italian tenor, also offered guests a fabulous musical show very much appreciated by the audience.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
