\nThe Moldovan authorities hope that the number of traffic accidents in the country will go down 2 times till 2015. 2.7 thousand road accidents happened in Moldova in 2009, when 350 persons died and over 3 thousand persons got injuries. The number of traffic accidents went down 17% during January-October 2010 in comparison to the analogous period of the last year.<\/p>\n

During the meeting on promoting road security in the Republic of Moldova (RM) on Tuesday, Prime Minister Vladimir Filat said the average index of traffic accidents in Moldova is 2 times more than in France or Germany.<\/p>\n

The Premier said among main reasons of accidents is – the excessive speed, the disregard of pedestrian interests, the driving under the influence while intoxicated, and also the low quality road infrastructure.<\/p>\n

"We are still a poor country and we can not afford building good roads for people to drive in safe conditions", Filat said.<\/p>\n

According to him, there is necessary to strengthen measures for traffic safety, all responsible persons must be imbued with the importance of human life protection and to make efforts for reducing the number of traffic accidents.<\/p>\n

Minister of the Interior Victor Catan said 85% of traffic accidents in Moldova happen because of drivers, and no more than 60% – in European countries.<\/p>\n

He said 70% of country roads have no road signs and traffic lane markings which also causes the road accident number growth.<\/p>\n

Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Anatol Salaru said 90% of roads are in unsatisfactory condition. Authorities intend to repair 1 thousand km of roads next year, and also to cover with crushed stone 3.5 thousand km of roads.<\/p>\n

"Thus and so, one can say with certainty, the RM will have European quality roads starting from the next year. Besides, there is projected to increase the allocation to the Road Fund by 400 million lei – to 1 billion lei", the Minister said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
