Prime Minister Vlad Filat today visited the villages Nemteni and Cotul Morii, Hancesti district, situated on the bank of the Prut river, the government’s press service has said.<\/p>\n

Last night the dam in Nemteni broke and 170 houses were flooded. Inhabitants of the hit zone were evacuated, with employees of the Service of Civil Protection and Emergencies, servicemen and local authorities working on the spot.<\/p>\n

The head of the Service of Civil Protection and Emergencies, Mihai Harabagiu, said that the situation was under control the day before.<\/p>\n

"During the night the situation took a U-turn. Sixty servicemen are assisting the victims of the disaster and other 60 will arrive on the spot soon," Harabagiu said.<\/p>\n

He mentioned that the overflowed water was streaming down to the meadow of the village Cotul Morii, which might be flooded too if the dam there does not resist.<\/p>\n

Vlad Filat visited the flooded houses in Nemteni and talked to the victims. He asked the local authorities to mobilize the available resources in order to help them, to create accommodation conditions and to provide foodstuffs and all they needed.<\/p>\n

"We will identify the resources necessary to help those whose houses are flooded. The government will provide all the assistance needed to cope with this disaster," Filat said.<\/p>\n

The prime minister asked the authorities to warn Nemteni residents whose houses were running the risk of floods and to help evacuate them.<\/p>\n

Filat also visited Cotul Morii, village which was running the risk of flood. The authorities said that a great number of people whose houses might be flooded refused to be evacuated. It was said that the local hospital would accommodate eventual victims and some people would stay at their relatives in the neighbouring villages.<\/p>\n

The prime minister requested that all the necessary things should be provided to the people from flood-hit regions.<\/p>\n

"Please let me know what you need: foodstuffs, clothing and fuel. We will give you all that you need," Filat said.<\/p>\n
