The Awards 2009 include both positive as well as negative events which, unfortunately, are also present in our life.

SUCCESS 2009

Concerning export, the year 2009 was most successful for the Cuciurgan power station situated in Moldova’s breakaway Transnistrian region and owned by the Unified Energy System of Russia. After the beginning of 2009, Moldova resumed electricity imports from the Cuciurgan plant. This allowed the company to resume exports to Romania, significantly increase electricity production and, for the first time since early 1990s, it was able to put into operation five generators. Unlike most Transnistrian companies, the Cuciurgan power station not only managed to avoid a decline in production, but also has become the largest taxpayer in the region.

WITHDRAWAL 2009

Russia’s largest mobile handset retailer, Euroset, has left Moldova. Euroset president, Aleksander Malis, said that the Moldovan market was "black or grey". "It is possible to work in these conditions, but Euroset is a transnational corporation and we understand that transparency will bring us a higher profit than shadow economy," he said. Initially, Euroset opened 30 showrooms in Moldova, but their number was decreasing every year. The revenue earned by Euroset in Moldova did not exceed 1% of its total revenue.

LOSS 2009

The Economic Court started the procedure of declaring the joint stock company, Acorex Wine Holding, bankrupt. The request to launch the bankruptcy procedure was submitted by the company’s management after Acorex Wine Holding was unable to repay the approximately 130 million lei owed to its creditors. The company, which had been one of Moldova’s most successful wineries and one of its largest exporters, started facing financial problems after Russia banned Moldovan wine imports in 2006. Acorex Wine Holding was set up in 1989 and today it is a well integrated production and commercial structure controlling the whole production process – from the planting of vineyards to the bottling of wine. The company owns four factories that are provided with modern Italian and French equipment.

TRUST 2009

In 2009, the commercial bank Moldova-Agroindbank received two credit lines from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (20 million euros) and from the European Investment Fund for Southeastern Europe (15 million euros). The fact that Moldova- Agroindbank was given these credit lines amid the global financial crisis proves that foreign institutions trust this bank and that the policy pursued by its management is correct.

WINDOW 2009

The EU Common Visa Centre at the Hungarian embassy in Chisinau has extended its services in 2009 and now its issues visas for 11 EU member states – Hungary, Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Slovenia, Sweden, Luxembourg, Belgium and Finland.
