The popularity of the opposition Communist Party and its leader, Vladimir Voronin, has significantly declined, but most Moldovans still believe that this party is capable of successfully resolving the country’s social and economic problems, a Barometer of Public Opinion poll has indicated.<\/p>\n

It was conducted by the Institute of Public Policies (IPP) between 16 and 30 November among 1,118 respondents. The margin of error is 3 per cent.<\/p>\n

According to the poll, 16.6 per cent of the respondents trust Vladimir Voronin, while presidential candidate and Democratic Party leader Marian Lupu is supported by 19.8 per cent.<\/p>\n

Political analyst Igor Botan has explained that Lupu’s increasing popularity is due to the fact that he was the only candidate for the 7 December failed presidential election and that the Democratic Party managed to enter parliament at the 29 July parliamentary election thanks to him.<\/p>\n

"In the past, the Democratic Party was supported by some 3 per cent of respondents. Its current rating of 14.1 per cent is explained exclusively by the popularity of its leader, who transfers his positive image onto the whole party," Botan said.<\/p>\n

The rating of Prime Minister Vlad Filat has also increased – from 11 per cent [in July 2009] to 14.1 per cent in November.<\/p>\n

The poll showed that the Democratic Party enjoyed the highest support among the population, being trusted by 40 per cent of the respondents. It is followed by Filat’s Liberal Democratic Party with 39.2 per cent and the Communist Party with 38.8 per cent.<\/p>\n

At the same time, 27.5 per cent of citizens believe that the Communist Party stands the greatest chance of improving the economic situation in the country; 24.7 per cent believe that only the Communists can cope with the economic crisis, and 18.3 per cent say that only this party can bring Moldova to the EU.<\/p>\n

Botan said that voters had such an attitude towards the Communist Party becaus e "many Moldovans still have nostalgia for and regret the collapse of the former Soviet Union".
