A unification hora (traditional dance that gathers everyone into a big closed circle), a march and a concert, this is how Romania’s National Day was marked in Chisinau. About 150 young people from the right bank of the Prut River (Romania) joined events organized on the occasion of the 91st anniversary of Great Unification from Alba Iulia (city in western Romania). Acting president Mihai Ghimpu, who stated that he was a Romanian, did not miss the events dedicated to Romanians from all over the world.<\/p>\n

On 1 December, Chisinau’s streets were coloured red, yellow and blue (the colours of Romania’s and Moldova’s flags). About 200 people danced the unification hora on the Square of Principalities’ Unification.<\/p>\n

Gheorghe Scarlat: "I wanted to show our Romanian brothers from Chisinau that we celebrate Unification Day jointly with them. They are not alone and have never been despite the fact that the Commu! nist government split us."<\/em><\/p>\n

Unnamed participant:  "We are not celebrating the Unification day of another state. We are celebrating the day of Romanians because we are all Romanians."<\/em><\/p>\n

The slogans shouted out by the participants in the event as well as the numerous tricolours drew the attention of passers-by.<\/p>\n

Passer-by (in Russian overlaid with Romanian translation): "Today is 1 December, Romania’s unification from Alba Iulia. Since the youth wants and enjoys this event, then why not. Welcome. This is absolutely democratically.
\n[Passer-by] The participants are doing a good thing but they should shout "Unite Moldovans" and not "Unite Romanians" because as a matter of fact we are Moldovans. Moldova is occupied by Romania and by Ukraine too. <\/em>[Reference to the fact that parts of medieval Moldova are presently in Romania and Ukraine.]"<\/p>\n

The events started early in the morning, when officials laid flowers at a monument to [Moldovan medieval ruler] Stefan cel Mare. The celebration continued on Chisinau’s central square in the evening. Acting President Mihai Ghimpu delivered a welcoming speech without attending the ceremony too long however.<\/p>\n

Mihai Ghimpu: "I bow to those who fought for peace and democracy and to God’s will that Romanians live on this land, Russians in Russia, French in France and Germans in Germany."<\/em><\/p>\n
