The Moldovan Parliament approved in the first reading the bill on amending the Code of Television and Radio Broadcasting. The document was supported by all the 53 members of the majority Alliance for European Integration. The opposition Communist faction of 48 voted against the bill.<\/p>\n

Chairwoman of the parliamentary Standing Committee for Culture, Sciences, Education, Youth Affairs and the Mass Media, Corina Fusu, offered the following substantiation of the need to amend the Code: currently, members of the Supervisory Board of the Teleradio-Moldova public company are appointed by two-thirds of parliament. With the present-day proportion of political forces in the forum, the appointment of new Board members will be a constant problem. Due precisely to this reason, 4 of the Board’s 9 posts are vacant now, "so we propose that Supervisory Board members be appointed by a simple majority of parliamentarians".<\/p>\n

The opposition Communist faction strongly criticized the parliamentary majority for what they qualified as "the intention to put the public television under their control, and the majority is doing this without an agreement with the Council of Europe, which in due time gave its approval of the Code".
