Moldova has received a new installment of financial assistance worth 1.4 million dollars from the United States to combat corruption, human trafficking and organised crime. U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Asif J. Chaudhry and Parliament Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu signed an agreement to this effect on Tuesday, Sept. 22.<\/p>\n

The proceeds will be used to organize workshops of continuous juridical training for judges and prosecutors, to implement a syllabus in the USA for graduates of the National Justice Institute, to provide equipment, etc.<\/p>\n

Within a ceremony of signing Amendment 9 to the Letter of agreement on drugs control and application of legal norms between the governments of the USA and Moldova, Asif J. Chaudhry said that this is the first document signed with the new Moldovan leadership. The diplomat pointed out the importance of the agreement for reforming Moldova’s judicial system and combating human trafficking and organised crime. He gave assurances that the USA will continue to support Moldova’s efforts to combat negative phenomena in society and adjust the legislation to the highest standards.<\/p>\n

Speaker Mihai Ghimpu thanked the US official for assistance, noting that it contributes to enforcing the state based on the rule of law and democracy in Moldova. Ghimpu said that Moldova needs backing to combat such phenomena as human trafficking and organised crime. Also, training judicial staff is very important for the supremacy of law to dominate in Moldova, the parliament speaker said.<\/p>\n

The first agreement on drugs’ control and application of legal norms between the USA and Moldova was signed on 28 August 2001. Moldova has received eight million dollars within this agreement so far.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
