The police department in Gwent and the Tredegar comprehensive, a local high school in Wales, made a shocking video depicting an accident caused by texting and its emotional aftermath. It attempts to stop car crashes caused by the driver texting while driving. The short film (see below; view discretion is advised; too graphic), starring young actors from south Wales, shows a teenage girl killing four people after she uses her mobile phone to send a text message.<\/p>\n

The film by Peter Watkins-Hughes, named "Cow" after its main character named Rachel Cowan, was enhanced with computer technology and depicts a multiple car highway accident. The violent crash resulted when a young driver was distracted from the road by a texting conversation. The second by second progress of the crash is painfully vivid to anyone who has been in the middle of an accident in which you fear what the next split second will bring. The film focuses not only on the crash itself, but its emotional aftermath.<\/p>\n

According to a BBC report research has shown texting while driving slows reaction time by 35%. RAC Foundation’s research showed reaction times slowed by 35% when 17 to 24-year-olds drove while reading and writing text messages. And its research last year showed that texting while driving impairs motorists more than being under the influence of drink or drugs. It said nearly 50% of drivers aged between 18 and 24 texted while driving.<\/p>\n

Gwent Police said it hoped the graphic video would be shown in schools around Wales and hopefully the rest of the UK. Texting while driving is illegal in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
