The Moldova Foundation in Washington, DC, in cooperation with Moldovan Diaspora groups in Northern America and Europe, has launched the ‘get-out-the-vote’ campaign: "5 SMS for a democratic Moldova!"<\/p>\n

This is a civic, non-partisan initiative aimed at urging Moldova’s citizens to participate in the early parliamentary elections that takes place on July 29, according to the press release of the foundation.<\/p>\n

"This is not only our right, but it is also our civic duty to participate at voting. We want to convince our compatriots to participate in the voting process despite obstacles created by the authorities – elections on a working day and their refusal to open polling stations outside diplomatic missions, especially in places where Moldova has no embassies (Canada, Ireland, Spain),” Vlad Spanu, president of the Moldova Foundation, stated.<\/p>\n

Campaign’s organizers called upon the Moldovan citizens, who work abroad, to send text messages, emails, mail, and make phone calls home to their relatives and friends with the following message: "Do not be indifferent! Take part in elections on July 29! The fate of your children in your hands! Vote for a democratic Moldova! Send this message to five friends!" They intend to reach Moldovan emigrants by using social media networks like Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo, Gmail groups, email, etc.<\/p>\n

"The Moldovan Diaspora in Canada did not participate in the elections in Moldova because there is no Moldovan consulate or embassy there. In order for us to participate in elections we need to travel to Washington or New York, but to do this, we need US entry visas and, moreover, the trip is expensive. Nevertheless, our community intend to organize a group of voters to travel to the United States and cast our votes on July 29", president of the Association "The Community of Moldovans in Quebec", former Molodvan parliamentarian, Alla Mindicanu said.<\/p>\n

"We are asking all who care about the future of Moldova to get involved in this campaign, committing oneself to convince five friends, relatives from Moldova to participate at voting. Let’s say a strong “Yes” to democracy, liberty and the truth in the Republic of Moldova!" – declared Ion Stamati, who represents the Community of Bessarabians in Ireland.
