The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) will examine, on 14 September 2009, the appeal submitted by Liberal Democratic Party MP Alexandru Tanase against the Moldovan law prohibiting citizens with dual citizenship from holding public office, Moldovan judge to the ECHR Mihai Poalelungi said last week at a meeting with students of the European School of Political Studies under the Council of Europe. He said that the Grand Chamber will examine the ECHR decision passed at the beginning of 2009 and describing the law banning citizens with dual citizenship from holding public office as discriminatory and in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the Convention on Citizenship. A number of European official insisted that the Moldovan authorities should abide by the ECHR ruling. However, the Moldovan government has appealed against it in the court’s Grand Chamber. ‘Moldova is one of the states which has appealed against the smallest number of decisions in the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights’, Poalelungi stated. He said that Moldova is among the first 12 countries when it comes to the number of applications submitted to the ECHR by Moldovan citizens – about 1.5 thousand every year.
