Over 500 people who have been deported from Moldova during Soviet times, as well as members of their families, today marched along Chisinau’s main street to mark the 60th anniversary of the second wave of deportation.<\/p>\n

They marched from the monument to Moldovan medieval ruler Stefan cel Mare in the centre of Chisinau to the railway terminal to lay flowers to the place where a monument to Moldovans who were deported in 1941 and 1949 is to be erected.<\/p>\n

The participants in the rally carried banners saying "The 14th Russian Army, go away from Moldova!", "The Communist Party should be outlawed!", "Stalin is the executioner of Bessarabia!". They also shouted "Communists, get away from Moldova," "Down with the army of [Interior Minister Gheorghe] Papuc,", "Opposition with us, the Communists should go to the rubbish bin".<\/p>\n

The member of the opposition Our Moldova Alliance, Leonid Bujor, expressed regret that President Vladimir Voronin did not participate in the event and did not help deportation victims.<\/p>\n

"The government has earmarked huge funds from the state budget to renovate the Eternitate [Eternity] memorial complex [dedicated to World War II heroes], but it cannot find money to erect a monument to deportation victims. The Communists should pay compensations to deportation victims similar to those paid to war veterans as thousands of people have died because of the Communist regime," Bujor stated.<\/p>\n

Chisinau acting mayor Nistor Grozavu pledged that the Chisinau city hall will build a monument to deportation victims, while the Chisinau municipal council is due to approve the sum of 3m lei [267,141 dollars] necessary for this purpose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
