President Vladimir Voronin demanded that Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii adopted a decision to replace the wood coffins with plastic ones from January 1, 2009. The statement was made by the leader of the Our Moldova Alliance Party (AMN) Serafim Urechean at Thursday’s sitting of the Parliament. <\/p>\n

Urechean said that he saw a confidential document dated August 22, 2008, by which the head of state instructed the Premier to make a decision providing for the replacement of the wooden coffins with coffins made of plastic or with special polyethylene sacks as from January 1, 2009.

\nAccording to Urechean, in the given letter Vladimir Voronin says that the general death rate in Moldova is on the rise, but the wood reserves are limited. <\/p>\n

"The shift to market economy implies a more rational use of the natural resources and the promotion of an economic and social development compatible with the environment. The death rate has risen in the past few years and the costs of making wood coffins have increased,” the confidential letter reads. <\/p>\n

"Given that the wood reserves in the country are limited and in order to preserve the forests and improve the ecological situation, I demand that the Government of Moldova examine the created situation and take a decision by which to order that all the coffins in Moldova be made from plastic from January 1, 2009,” the letter says. <\/p>\n

When the meeting closed, Serafim Urechean distributed copies of the letter dated August 22, 2008 that had the registration number and heading of the Presidential Office and the signature of Vladimir Voronin. <\/p>\n

The Presidential Office described Urechean’s statements as false, blasphemous and irresponsible. It said that the matters related to the funeral service are not within the competence of the head of state and assured that the oldest and most sacred traditions of the Moldovan people are not under threat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
