Several hundreds of students of Chisinau vocational schools, parents and teachers on November 18 protested in front of the Parliament building for three hours, demanding that the draft Education Code, which is to be soon inspected by the Parliament, be amended. Their major demand is that the Code contain the phrase “professional high school”. <\/p>\n

Andrei Pavaloi, one of the protest organizers and teacher at the Vocational High School No.1 in Chisinau, has told REPORTER.MD that the teaching staffs of the vocational schools submitted proposals, but they were not taken into account when the Education Code was drafted.

\nPavaloi said that under the new Education Code, the vocational schools will be transformed into handicraft schools that will not provide general education and their graduates will be thus deprived of the right to continue their studies in universities. <\/p>\n

Representatives of vocational high schools were authorized to hold protests for three days. So, they will stage new protests during the next two days between 13.00 and 16.00. <\/p>\n

The draft Education Code worked out at the proposal of President Vladimir Voronin was made public on September 19 and is to be examined by the Parliament until this yearend. Recently, a number of university rectors protested against some of the stipulations of the Code, which say that the universities will be fully financed from the state budget, the studies in universities will be only budget-paid, etc. <\/p>\n

There are 52 vocational schools in Moldova at present. They include two professional high schools and 15 handicraft schools.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
