Jurists of the League for the Defense of Human Rights (LADOM) say that the way in which the rights of the prisoners in Moldova are respected is not in accordance with the international norms and needs to be essentially improved. <\/p>\n

According to them, the illegal conviction, the lack of a fair remedy, the fabrication of evidence, abuses by the police, the non-provision of the necessary medical assistance are among the most frequent violations of convicts’ rights about which the prisoners informed the jurists of the Center of Legal Assistance for Detainees, who paid visits to the Moldovan penitentiaries.

\nLADOM statistics show that this year the jurists have examined 130 petitions filed by detainees and their relatives. 300 convicts and their relatives were offered advice by the Center’s jurists. <\/p>\n

The Center of Legal Assistance for Detainees started work in February 2007 as part of LADOM, with the financial support of the Swedish Helsinki Committee for Human Rights. It aims to improve populations’ access to justice. <\/p>\n

Any detainee or their relatives can inform the Center of Legal Assistance for Detainees about violations of prisoners’ rights through applications or direct appeals to LADOM.
