“The forgotten European country” is the title of an article that appeared in the Belgian publication “La Libre”, which tried to analyze the situation in Moldova. <\/p>\n

"The Moldovans are the founders of Romania, which is now an EU member. But the Soviet influence created a gap that will not be narrowed soon,” the article reads.

\nQuoting the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Moldova, Cesare de Montis, the author says that the Moldovans are in Europe, stating also the opinion of the MP Veascelav Untila, who said that “we form part of the Western Commonwealth of Independent States. Simultaneously, we are in Eastern Europe. We don’t know where we are anymore.” <\/p>\n

“A part of the Moldovan citizens have Romanian passports. Therefore, the European Union included them in the neighborhood policy in 2004, alongside such countries as Israel, Libya and Algeria, but do not consider it yet a candidate for admission,” the article says. <\/p>\n

Article author Christophe Lamfalussy says that the Belgians have a bad impression about Moldova. When they hear "Moldova", they imagine prostitution and crime. <\/p>\n

“The small republic faces such problems as criminality, prostitution, corruption, bureaucracy, harassment of independent press and multiplication of the small parties. <\/p>\n

The article also says that many Moldovan citizens obtain forged identity cards so as they could travel freely via Europe. <\/p>\n
