The latest floods could cause an epidemic of acute diarrheic diseases such as dysintery, typhoid fever, viral hepatitis A, cholera, anthrax and tetanus. <\/p>\n

Minister of Health Larisa Catrinici told a news conference on August 5 that the number of diarrheic diseases over the past two weeks has increased and the situation could worsen as the wells have been inundated. <\/p>\n

The minister said that the situation in the flooded Anenii-Noi, Causeni, Stefan-Voda and other districts is worrisome. She also said that the wells and water supply systems in the areas where the flood waters receded are being cleaned and disinfected. <\/p>\n

The authorities started to purchase vaccines against viral hepatitis A. Some 42,000-45,000 children aged 3-14 from the affected areas will be immunized. The Health Ministry now has about 10,000 doses. The rest will be purchased in installments from the money offered by donors. The Health Ministry provided US$200,000 for the purpose. <\/p>\n

In order to prevent the acute diarrheic diseases, doctors recommend consuming cleaned water, purchasing food products from authorized places, avoiding contact with dead animals and not swimming and fishing in flooded areas. The doctor should be immediately called in case of nausea, stomachache, fever and other symptoms.\/\/REPORTER.MD <\/p>\n
