Last week’s heavy rain seriously affected northern Moldova, especially the districts of Ocnita and Briceni, from where a part of the population was evacuated. <\/p>\n

Mihai Harabagiu, the head of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, told a news conference on July 28 that 33 houses were flooded as a result of the rise in the water level in the Dniester. Yet, 278 houses were filled with water after the Prut River flooded. Twenty-one of these houses were destroyed. <\/p>\n

According to Harabagiu, 140 houses were flooded in Drepcauti village in Briceni district. As many as 375 persons were evacuated from the village. Eighty-five houses were flooded in Criva village in Briceni district. Seven of these were destroyed. Forty-one houses were flooded in Lipcani village in the same district. Four out of these were damaged. <\/p>\n

Harabagiu said that the Emergencies Service has taken measures aimed at preventing the consequences of the floods. The water level in rivers and ponds is permanently measured. Drinking water is being stored for reserves. The damage caused by the floods is being estimated. <\/p>\n
