Chisinau officials and writers laid flowers at the monument to Stephan the Great and Holy on July 2, when it is celebrated 504 years of the ruler’s death. <\/p>\n

The laying of flowers was followed by a short performance given by the poets Arcadie Suceveanu and Valeriu Matei and the folk group “Plaiesii” led by Nicolae Gribincea. <\/p>\n

“Theses commemorative activities resumed last year after a long pause are an occasion to make the necessary corrections in the perception of the symbol of Stephan the Great, which was confiscated and distorted. We must restore its real significance of symbol of the whole Roman world and not of Moldovan separatism and primitivism,” poet Arcadie Suceveanu said during the event. <\/p>\n

For his part, the Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said that we should endeavor to achieve the same results as Stephan the Great, who did a remarkable thing – managed to preserve the country’s independence in very hostile conditions. “With Stephan the Great in our hearts, we should make effort to join the European Union so as all his fortresses are in a single place and not separated.
