After 68 years of regular activity, Radio „BBC Romania”, which also includes the BBC Office from Republic of Moldova, will stop working. The reason is the decrease of the BBC impact in Romania and the new priority of the company to launch a TV channel in Arabian language and one in Persan language, DECA-press informs.
\nThe broadcast of programs in Romanian language devoted to Republic of Moldova will also stop working as the office from Chisinau cannot work without the infrastructure of the whole editorial office in Romanian language. The „BBC Chisinau” Office has been working since the 90s, and on August 27th 2006, „BBC WS” opened in Chisinau a studio with modern equipment.
\nThe closing of the „BBC WS” editorial office in Romanian language will save 1,3 million pounds. Yet, it will affect 46 employees, including 30 in Bucharest, four in Chisinau and 12 in London.
\nThe four FM frequencies of „BBC” from Romania and the one from Republic of Moldova, which broadcast programs in Romanian language as well, will continue broadcasting programs in English in Romania and in English, Russian and Ukrainian in Republic of Moldova, as much as the authorities will permit, a press release issued by the British company shows.
\n„In the communist period, „BBC” was among the few independent voices which would broadcast news for the Romanians smothered by the communist propaganda. Looking backward in 68 years of activity of the editorial office in Romanian language, I know that our listeners will be dissapointed that we stop working”, the director of the Romanian BBC editorial office, Razvan Scortea, concludes.
\nAt present, radio „BBC Romania” broadcasts almost four hours per day and has its own site.
