The lawyers of the policemen suspected of helping to transport 200 kilograms of heroine late in March filed an application to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), asking that it examines their case as soon as possible. <\/p>\n

At a news conference on May 29, Vitalie Nagacevschi, the lawyer that represents two policemen at the ECHR, said he is sure that the Court in Strasbourg will decide in the favor of the plaintiffs because the accused policemen are held illegally and the reasons for their arrest have not been presented yet. <\/p>\n

According to Nagacevschi, the prosecutors that ordered the arrest of the policemen should explain why they were detained, provide evidence showing that they pose a danger or that they could influence the investigation in a way or another and say what persons are involved in the investigation. He said that the policemen should be remanded in custody only if there is evidence that they could commit new offences if on the outside or could hide. <\/p>\n

Nagacevscho said that the arrested policeman have not been indicted and are not interrogated. “The methods used show that this is a flimsy case,” the lawyer said. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Marii, the lawyer for the third arrested policeman, said that important persons involved in drug trafficking could have interests in this case. <\/p>\n

On May 20, the police discovered the largest quantity of contraband heroine. On the black market, the about 200 kg of heroine are valued at 10 million euros. Two Turkish citizens and three employees of the Interior Ministry – Corneliu Savca, Ruslan Topa and Dumitru Moiseev – were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the given case.
