A number of 4,131 HIV-infected persons were registered in Moldova at the beginning of 2008. The HIV-related cases are officially recorded in Moldova since 1997. Some 500 HIV-infected people died meanwhile. <\/p>\n

The League of HIV-Infected People of Moldova will organize a press conference on the World AIDS Day marked this year on May 18. A commemoration event will take place in the Public Garden “Stephan the Great”, starting at 11:00. <\/p>\n

The League was founded to sensitize the society to the problems faced by the HIV carriers. It brings together nine NGOs working in different regions of Moldova and is financially supported by the United Nations Program on HIV\/AIDS (UNAIDS). <\/p>\n

According to Gabriela Ionascu, the manager of UNAIDS in Moldova, most of the infected people are aged between 20 and 29. Moldova has medical equipment and medicines needed to sustain the vitality of these people as well as sufficient financial resources for prophylaxis and treatment, but there should be organized more awareness-raising campaigns, especially in rural areas. <\/p>\n

The number of HIV-infected people over the past three years has increased by 20% annually. Most of the cases are reported in the municipalities of Balti and Chisinau. <\/p>\n
