The phenomenon of money laundering in Moldova registered growing trends in 2007, as during this period four criminal cases were initiated as compared with only one a year before, stated Anticorruption Prosecutor Dorin Compan during the Monday seminar on “Measures to prevent and combat money laundering in insurance sector". <\/p>\n

At the same time, in 2007 the number of notifications on suspect transactions also increased. According to Compan, the Centre for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption received about 9 mln reports on performance of suspicious money transactions as compared with only 7 mln a year before. <\/p>\n

Iana Betivu, Head of Internal Audit and Security, National Commission for Financial Markets, stated that in order to prevent and combat money laundering and terrorism funding it is necessary to adjust the national laws to the international standards and experience in this area. <\/p>\n

Betivu noted the necessity to regulate the financial market in order to prevent illegal money transactions and opted for the improvement of the procedures for client identification. <\/p>\n

Council of Europe expert Jos de Wit stated for the press that the essential problem Moldova is facing in terms of prevention and combating money laundering is the existence of a relatively weak enforcement system if compared with the EU countries. <\/p>\n

To improve the situation in Moldova, Jos de Wit suggested improving the training basis for the specialists working with the prevention and combating of money laundering. <\/p>\n

The seminar was organized under the joint project of the Council of Europe and European Commission against Corruption, Money Laundering and Terrorism Funding.
