Each fourth child in Moldova is physically abused by his parents, a survey launched by UNICEF, Ministry of Education and Youth, Ministry of Social, Child and Family Protection shows. <\/p>\n

At least 25% of the minors recognized they are beaten by their parents, and 20% of them stated their parents verbally aggress them, according to The Survey regarding the Violence towards Children. About 15% of the questioned suffer from lack of food and say nobody takes care of them. About 20% of the children suffer from verbal violence, while ten per cent of the parents confessed they abuse their children emotionally or psychologically. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan legislation forbids the violence to be applied, both verbal and physical, but the phenomenon is still very spread in the family and school, UNICEF Representative in Moldova Ray Virgilio Torres said on February 21, at a press conference. <\/p>\n

“The worst is the fact that ten per cent of the parents admit they abuse their children emotionally or physically. The adults that become parents should not take the beating as a way of educating their children. Many children and women that are physically abused in their families are ashamed of confessing or they consider themselves guilty of what is happening. A good part of the children do not know where they should address for help”, Torres said. <\/p>\n

To prevent the cases of violence, the whole society must be involved, Minister of Education and Youth Victor Ţvircun has said. “Taking into account the important role of the school in forming the personality of the child and its influence on the family, we are willing to familiarize the parents with the positive practices used in school, so that they take and use them in their families”, Ţvircun added. <\/p>\n

The ministry launched the national project School – Violence Free Environment, which will include more activities regarding the positive discipline and the non-violence, special hours on this subject, publication of some brochures for pupils, informative seminars for the teaching staff and the education administration. <\/p>\n

Half of the employees from over four hundred state institutions, as schools, kindergartens and local authorities say they are not acquainted with the procedures of registering the violence cases, and the specialists from the rural areas meet more cases of violence rather than those of the urban ones, Social, Family and Child Protection Deputy Minister Lucia Gavriliţă has said. <\/p>\n

“In 2008, we plan to organize special seminars for all the social assistants from the country, within which they will train how to find and act correctly in case the children are abused”, Gavriliţă said. <\/p>\n
