The number of Moldova’s population, which was calculated on the basis of birth and death data, constituted 3.572 million people without taking into consideration Transnistria – almost 13 thousand less than a year ago. <\/p>\n

According to National Bureau for Statistics, the reasons for the population number decrease are the negative demographic indicators and migration abroad. <\/p>\n

The majority of the population lives in the rural areas – 2.1 million. The most densely populated raions are the Orhei raion – 125.9 thousand people (-1.4 thousand), Cahul – 123.8 thousand (- 0.3 thousand), Hincesti – 123.5 thousand. The most insignificant umber of people lives in Besarabca – 29.4 thousand. The Chisinau population number constitutes – 785.1 thousand (+4.8 thousand) people, that of Balti – 148.1 thousand (+1 thousand) people. <\/p>\n

The total death rate of the Moldovan population in January-September 2007 constituted 31.61 thousand people – by 3.2 thousand more than the birth rate. <\/p>\n

According to the census of 2004 the population of the Republic of Moldova constituted 3.388 million people.
