Moldovan pacifists are claiming they are being discredited and intimidated in order to curb the growing number of young citizens wishing to undergo an alternative service instead of military service. <\/p>\n

Chairman of the “Pacifists Without Borders” international association Anatolie Gutu told a news conference in Infotag that pacifists have lately been subjected to various provocations, bribes are tried to be handed in to them, etc. – all for the only sake of convincing the youth to never address to the association for help. <\/p>\n

Gutu is convinced all such provocations are made and obstacles are put to the pacifist activities because the Moldovan authorities come across tremendous difficulties at finding enough number of draftees for the armed forces. <\/p>\n

Gutu said that every year nearly 200 people here prefer the alternative civilian service to the military duty. <\/p>\n

“They pay 25% of their wages to the State Budget, but the person responsible for the alternative service organization does not receive salary. Nobody knows how this money is used. I don’t think the money is used for maintaining the National Army”, said the association chairman. <\/p>\n

In his belief, the small Moldova does not need an army at all, for the republic does not intend to wage a war with anybody. He emphasized, “The Moldovan authorities must observe the Law on the Alternative Service.
