The India Shop started the ‘Newspaper Bag Unit’ of their company in 2004. A group of Indian adults, who’d escaped poverty as children by making these newspaper bags, decided to use their own income to help young children from the surrounding streets of Delhi that were suffering the same situation as they had. By being part of this initiative these children can be going to school and playing (as they should), rather than pulling heavy rickshaws or polishing shoes for a living. <\/p>\n

Heading further east to the Philippines, a group of 200 women decided to form a co-operative to clean up their local neighbourhood. Initially they collected rubbish themselves but as the popularity of the concept grew they were able to install recycle bins in public places and schools to allow people to volunteer their non-biodegradable juice or sauce packs. They now collect 50,000 packets a day and after being sorted and cleaned they’re sewn together and become these rainbow bright Rubbish Bags. The profits are divided between factory workers and the co-operative. Not so rubbish after all. <\/p>\n

Dorothy Perkins are currently stocking the Rubbish Bags in four styles – a woven tote (£15), a stitched juice bag (£10), a woven handbag (£18) with wooden handle which is made from end of line material that would have been thrown away and a woven purse (£6). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
