In the near time the number of suits against Moldova, as well as decisions by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Moldovan Government will increase. It was said on Thursday at public hearings, conducted by the parliamentary standing committee on human rights, appointments and immunity. <\/p>\n

All in all, in 1998-2006 the ECHR received about 2 800 appeals from Moldovan citizens. The court refused to consider 840 of them. The court has not taken decisions on many cases yet. Moldova lost about 70 suits in the \u0415\u0421HR and paid more than 23 million lei to the plaintiffs. Moldova lost the most considerable number of cases this year. <\/p>\n

MNA Parliamentarian Leonid Bujor remarked at hearings that the number of complaints is increasing, in particular, because of the inefficiency of the Moldovan Justice. In his opinion, the population has no confidence in it and, dissatisfied with local courts’ decision, appeals to the \u0415\u0421\u041dR. <\/p>\n

Chairman of the Lawyers for Protection of Human Rights Organization Vitalie Nagacevschii expressed the analogous opinion. He remarked that the European Court often condemns Moldova because of corruption in the judicial system and its dependence on the authorities. <\/p>\n

Chairman of the Council of the College of Barristers Gheorghe Amihalachioae considers that the number of appeals and the lost suits is increasing, because many judges refuse to apply the \u0415\u0421HR jurisprudence. <\/p>\n

Government representative Vladimir Grosu remarked that the European Court takes often decisions against Moldova because of the delayed execution of court decisions and for the ungrounded long detention of people. <\/p>\n
