The actions planned by the Interethnic Relations Bureau (BRI) in 2006 and in the first half of 2007, within the implementation of the Moldova-European Union (EU) Action Plan, have been fully carried out. BRI director Olga Goncearova made a statement to this effect at a conference on summing up the institution’s activity. <\/p>\n

Goncearova stressed that the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages were at the basis of teh actions carried out by the bureau in the field. <\/p>\n

The BRI director said that the institution carried out practically all the actions stipulated in the framework convention for the protection of national minorities. According to Goncearova, one of the subjects on which the Council of Europe experts drew the institution’s attention was the situation of Romanies in Moldova. <\/p>\n

In this respect, Goncearova said the bureau elaborated an action plan on the support of Moldovan Romanies for 2007-2010, approved at a government meeting in late 2006. She said that, according to European experts, the Romanies’ situation is better in Moldova as compared to the other countries, as they have access to university education etc. <\/p>\n

Goncearova said hat, early next August, BRI is to present a report on the implementation of the international convention on the elimination of all the forms of racial discrimination at a plenary session of the UN Committee in Geneva. <\/p>\n

Another plan of measures BRI is to implement is the plan on supporting the Moldovan diaspora. Olga Goncearova said that, under this plan, BRI already collaborates with 46 organisations from 22 countries where Moldovan citizens have their residence. <\/p>\n

Among other measures carried out by the Interethnic Relations Bureau Goncearova named the organisation of the Martisor festival in every country where Moldovan citizens have residence, the holding of congresses of Moldovans from abroad and other actions. <\/p>\n
