Media organizations are concerned by the intimidations of journalists by police and are asking authorities to supplement the Criminal Code with an article with a view to punish the persons who intentionally put obstacles in the activity of the media in Moldova. <\/p>\n

According to a statement remitted to BASA-press Agency by the Independent Journalism Center, Independent Press Association, "Media Impact" Agency, Committee for Media Freedom, Electronic Press Association, Journalist Investigation Center, "Acces-info" Center, and Journalists Union of Moldova, the actions of police on March 27 are ascribed to an "attempt to delay press from exercising their obligation to inform the general public". <\/p>\n

"Arrest of Pro TV Chisinau team, demagnetization of DTV’s videotape as well as arrest of representatives of the Liberal Party and NGOs are illegal and inadmissible acts in a jural state. Since the press intimidation actions periodically repeat in the recent years and authorities take no attitude about it, we consider it is essential to supplement the Criminal Code with an article that would punish those who delay the activity of the media and would not admit degradation of public institutions", the release also reads. <\/p>\n

Asked by BASA, Ala Meleca, Press Officer, Ministry of the Interior, communicated that the official MAI position regarding the Tuesday incident will be exposed in a press conference organized by the Chisinau General Police Station. Meleca failed to tell when this press conference will be held. <\/p>\n

On March 27, the shooting team of television stations Pro TV Chisinau and DTV were arrested by police during a protest held by the Liberal Party of Moldova in Chisinau.
