Moldovan public health authorities are reporting a sharp growth of influenza incidence last couple of weeks. <\/p>\n

The National Center for Preventive Medicine says that more than 2 thousand persons have already fallen sick of influenza since the beginning of the year. Of them, some 70% were children. And in Comrat town, a 3-month-old baby died of flu this week. <\/p>\n

Center Deputy Director Dr. Constantin Spinu told Infotag this year’s flu virus is more dangerous than last winter, and the influenza incidence is growing at an alarming pace. <\/p>\n

"Initially, we expected an incidence increase to start last December-January. But due to the unusually warm winter, however, the outbreak is taking place in February, with its peak expected in the last days of the month and in early March. We strongly advise all people to take precaution measures", said Dr. Spinu. <\/p>\n

First, the flu epidemic conquered southern Moldova. In the Cahul raion, for instance, the flu virus was registered in 29 of the raion’s 37 populated areas. Also, the respiratory-infection incidence is growing practically in all parts of the country. In mid-January, e.g., there were 15.5 thousand instances of acute respiratory diseases registered, and by now the figure has doubled. <\/p>\n

Only last two days in Chisinau, there were almost 4 hundred calls for doctors to come to the homes of patients who had a high temperature due to acute respiratory diseases and influenza. One flu-struck child was hospitalized in a serious condition. <\/p>\n

Last year, the Ministry of Health prohibited the selling of flu vaccines to individuals on grounds that pharmacies, which are overwhelmingly private ones, have no proper conditions for storing the delicate remedies. Accordingly, willing citizens were invited to queue for vaccination at state-run health institutions only.
