Moldovan Deputy Speaker Maria Postoico today presided over a working meeting on the protection of the rights of the child. Participating in the event were two international experts: one of the authors of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Nigel Cantwel, and an international expert in child protection, Herve Boechat, according to the parliament’s press service. <\/p>\n

Attending the event were also representatives of the juridical commission for rules and immunities, of the commission for human rights, the commission for social protection, health and family and the commission for national security, defence and public order. A guide for lawmakers, Child Protection, Guide for Lawmakers, was launched during the working meeting. It was distributed to the Moldovan MPs, with the assistance of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The book includes important aspects and recommendations for MPs in the process of examination and adoption of the legislative documents referring to child protection, and it will serve as a good working legislative instrument. <\/p>\n

Maria Postoico stressed the importance to establish a permanent and efficient cooperation between the international institutions and the national state authorities. Postoico thanked the UNICEF for the constructive dialogue and willingness to assist the Moldovan parliament in the process of amending and working out bills on the protection of child’s rights. <\/p>\n

"Besides our status of MPs, we are also parents, and it makes us to realise the importance of protecting the child’s rights and to undertake efforts necessary to contribute to improving the situation in this sector, by developing the legislative framework," Maria Postoico also said. <\/p>\n

The international experts expressed the UNICEF vision on the MPs’ role in promoting and observing the UN Convention’s principles. They also analyzed certain stipulations of the national legislation on the protection of children, especially of those without parents’ care, and on the adoption process through the light of their compliance with the international legislation. The international experts highlighted the importance to work out policies and an integrated legislative framework on the child’s rights. <\/p>\n

"Every child in Moldova has to be ensured the right to having a family. As to the children without parents, family services should be developed at the community level," Nigel Cantwel said. <\/p>\n
