\nChisinau, 6 September 2006 (Moldova.org) — The fifth edition of Moldova’s National Wine Festival starts on Saturday, October 7 in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova. As in other years, the most popular local wineries will present their best wines to participants. Folk dancers and musicians will build up the holiday spirit. But the main attraction for visitors is the wine tasting. Last year, the “procession of wine makers” marched on the main street of Chisinau arriving to the central plaza where key exhibits are displayed, including an improvised farmer courtyard. <\/p>\n

The first Wine Festival in Moldova was held in 2002 when the country’s parliament decided that such events should take place every year on the second Sunday in October. Top Moldovan leadership, official delegations from other countries, and representatives of foreign missions accredited to Moldova usually attend the Wine Festival. <\/p>\n

Organizers set the main goal of the Wine Festival to improve Moldova’s image as the wine producer and exporter and to attract tourists who could benefit from exciting trails to Moldovan villages where the grapes are grown, try Moldovan traditional cuisine and home-made wine. <\/p>\n

Previous years, many tourists from different counties got first hand experience of this little known wine country. Moldova with some 4.5 million inhabitants and the size of the Netherlands is placed among the top ten world wine exporters. Wine’s share in Moldova’s GDP is some 25 per cent. <\/p>\n
