Several thousands of citizens from different Moldovan settlements today participated in a meeting to commemorate the servicemen who died in the military actions at the Serpeni Bridgehead, east of Chisinau, in the battles for Moldova’s liberation from the fascist occupation. <\/p>\n

The event inaugurated a series of actions dedicated to the 15th anniversary of Moldova’s independence. <\/p>\n

At the meeting, President Vladimir Voronin said the annual meetings of all the generations, held at the Serpeni Memorial Compound, will become a national tradition. <\/p>\n

The president emphasized that, two years ago, one of the biggest battles within the Iasi-Chisinau Operation, was reconstituted in detail. By constructing this monument, we have managed to immortalise the heroism, the courage and devotion of the liberating servicemen, whose memory we evoke today, Vladimir Voronin said.

\nThe National Army’s Honorary Guard saluted the head of state, who laid wreaths of flowers at the monument to the unknown soldier and at the eternal fire. <\/p>\n

Moldovan MP Nicolae Gutul has said that, with the Russian Defence Ministry’s Central Archive’s support, four volumes were published in one copy with the names of those 12,000 soldiers who died in the Serpeni battle. <\/p>\n

A group of priests led by Metropolitan of Chisinau and the Whole Moldova Vladimir officiated a religious service, and laid those four volumes in Capela Durerii (Pain’s Chapel) within the memorial compound. <\/p>\n

Children’s artistic bands along with National Army servicemen presented a theatrical show. The children paid homage to the heroes, and wrote letters of thanks "for peace". Several tens of envelopes tied to balloons in the Moldovan national flag’s colours filled the sky over this settlement, and the soldiers improvised a passage from the battle on these places. <\/p>\n

Participating in the event also were Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev, government members, lawmakers, representatives of the local public administration, the diplomats accredited to Chisinau, guests, veterans, participants in the Afghanistan and Transnistrian wars. <\/p>\n

The Serpeni Bridgehead Memorial Compound was finished in 2004 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Moldova’s liberation from the fascist occupation. In April-August 1944, about 12,000 Soviet servicemen from the fifth and 62nd Guard Army, fifth Shock Army, 57th Army and other military units heroically died in the dreadful battles against the fascists.
