A major number of migrants have arrived to Moldova from Ukraine. They account for 43.7% of foreign citizens living in the republic.
\nAccording to the National Statistic Bureau, according to the results of the 2004 census, all in all 180.3 thousand migrants live in Moldova, 157.9 thousand of them live in the republic for more than 10 years. More than half of migrants are women. <\/p>\n

The share of migrants from Russia constitutes 42.3% (76.3 thousand people), from Kazakhstan – 3.8%, from Belarus – 2.1%, from Romania – 1.1%, from Germany – 0.8%. Migrants come mainly from cities and towns – 76%.

\nAt the same time, the number of Moldovan citizens, who has left the republic, amounted to 273 thousand people, 47.7% of them have not been at their motherland for more than a year. The age of 1\/3 of them accounts for 20-29 years. <\/p>\n

On the whole, 8% of the Moldovan citizens stay outside Moldova. In some raions the share of migrants reaches 10-12%. <\/p>\n

The majority of citizens (88.7%) work abroad, 6.5% study. The majority of migrants left for Russia (56.2%), followed by Italy – 19.4%, Romania – 3.9%, Portugal – 3.5%, Ukraine – 3.1%, Turkey – 3%. <\/p>\n

The positive balance of internal migration is registered in Chisinau, Balti and the Cahul raion. More Moldovan citizens have arrived to these administrative centers than have left them. For the last two years 44.4 thousand of citizens from various towns and raions of Moldova settled down in Chisinau, whereas 5.6 thousand people have left it. The number of those who have settled down in Balti has exceeded the number of those who have left it. In Balti, the number of newcomers has exceeded 3.3 times the number of those who have left it, in the Cahul raion – 1.6 times. <\/p>\n
