The fourth Moldovan 11-strong-military unit today left for Iraq by air to participate in the humanitarian post-conflict mission. <\/p>\n

The head of the Defence Ministry’s press service, lieutenant-colonel Valeriu Rusu said the eight sappers will work in Iraq during six months to defuse explosive devices, and the three general headquarters officers will fulfil more missions within the coalition’s Central Command. <\/p>\n

Unit’s commander Igor Cutie said the most important goals of those 11 servicemen are to help the Iraqi people, and by this way, to internationally promote Moldova’s image. <\/p>\n

Participating in the ceremony of seeing off the military at the Chisinau International Airport, Defence Minister Valeriu Plesca said the Defence Ministry is sure that those six months of the mission will be a good school both from the professional viewpoint and the from the diplomatic one for the Moldovan servicemen. <\/p>\n

Defence Ministry officials, relatives, friends etc. saw off the servicemen. <\/p>\n

The National Army soldiers participated in post-conflict humanitarian international operations in Iraq in September 2003 – March 2004 (42 military), July 2004 – February 2005 (12 military) and January 2006 – July 2006 (11 military), and defused about 290,000 explosive devices in all. Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin awarded state distinctions to all the contingents.
