Ambulances of the Emergency Hospital in Chisinau are overtaxed because of air temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius. Residents of the capital claim swoons or other problems challenged by hot weather. <\/p>\n

According to the press service of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the number of calls for emergency medical assistance has grown by 20 percent. Data of the National Centre of Emergency Medicine reveal that no massive emergency calls related to high temperatures were registered between June 22 and 27. <\/p>\n

Twenty-three cases of sunstroke without grave consequences were registered in the period concerned. However, a person was admitted at hospital with 1st-degree burns after tanning on banks of a pond in Chisinau. All those who called for doctor’s help received medical assistance on the spot. <\/p>\n

The ministry has made a series of recommendations against effects of high temperatures on population’s health. It recommends people not to expose themselves to the sun and to put on umbrellas, sunglasses and natural clothes of light colours. Also, it recommends population to increase the consumption of drinks up to 2-4 litres a day and not to consume fat food. Excessive consumption of coffee and alcohol drinks is not recommended. Showers and baths must be frequent when the weather is hot. Physical efforts are not recommended in the warmest periods of the day. A special attention must be paid to children, who must not be left to wait in cars exposed to the sun or transported by vehicles without air conditioners on long distances. Elderly, especially those suffering from cardiac and respiratory problems, must avoid walking and visits to busy places. <\/p>\n

Headaches, perspiration, fainting, nausea, vomiting, weak and rapid pulse, frequent breathing, and high body temperature are the signs of sunstroke. <\/p>\n
