The Moldovan government and the International Development Association (IDA within the World Bank) today signed a financing agreement for the bird flu control programme and preparation to combat human pandemic. The agreement was signed within the WB’s world programme for bird flu. <\/p>\n

The agreement was signed by Moldovan Finance Minister Mihai Pop and the WB regional director for Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova, Paul Bermingham. <\/p>\n

Bermingham told a news conference that the project’s total value is of 10.6 million dollars. IDA will allot 8 million dollars, of which 4 million dollars are to be granted and another 4 million dollars are to be given as credit. <\/p>\n

The Japanese government, the European Union, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Moldovan government are the project’s co-financers coming with 2.6 million dollars. The project is to be implemented in July 2006-December 2009, the WB official said. <\/p>\n

The project’s main goal is to minimize the danger the high pathogenic bird flu (HPBF) poses to the population. To meet this goal, the project will back the supervision of the disease’s outbreaks, preparation for intervention in case of outbreaks in humans and poultry, and will also support ways to combat them. The project will be implemented by the Agriculture and Food Ministry and the Health and Social Protection Ministry. <\/p>\n

WB’s role in Moldova as regards the HPBF is to mobilize means and technical expertise and create partnerships with donors and technical agencies. A technical team from the World Health Organization has joined the project’s team and took over the initiative to identify ways to protect population’s health. It is also planned that the Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Office of Epizooty will contribute with technical expertise to the project’s implementation.
