The Moldsilva State Forestry Agency and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), as the BioCarbon Fund’s representative, today signed an agreement on buying the reduction of emissions for the project on soil’s conservation in Moldova. <\/p>\n

The agreement was signed by the director-general of the Moldsilva State Agency, Anatol Popusoi, and the World Bank’s regional director for Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova, Paul Birmingham, on behalf of the International Development Association (IDA) and IBRD. <\/p>\n

During a news conference, Paul Birmingham stressed that, according to the above agreement, the BioCarbon Fund will purchase annually carbon dioxide’s reductions generated in the project’s region. The agreement sees a minimum volume of aggregate purchases equal to 600,000 tons in 2006-2015, with a "call" option for another 250,000 tons. The BioCarbon Fund offers a total financing of approximately 2.5 million dollars to buy the basic quantity. The project will be implemented during 2006-2015. <\/p>\n

The project on the soil’s conservation in Moldova will be implemented on the basis of the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change (Moldova is also party to), the Kyoto Protocol and the Clean Development Mechanism. <\/p>\n

The goal of the project’s extension is to re-establish, maintain and manage the natural woods on 6,000 ha, in order to eliminate the carbon from the atmosphere, in line with the Kyoto Protocol, and also to re-establish the woods, which represents the most economic use of the lands in the region. At the same time, the project will contribute to Moldova’s long-term ecological durability, as well as to reduce the processes of worldwide climate change. <\/p>\n

The BioCabon Fund is a World Bank-managed public initiative. It started working in May 2004, and totals a capital of 53.8 million dollars.
